about
Becomes Noise was written for Dissidents’ first performance, before we had a name or a sense of what we were going to be as an ensemble. Likewise, it came about during a time when I was beginning to explore an understanding of musical materials that existed on a spectrum from pure tone to harsh noise, something I would come to make an integral part of my compositional process and identity as an improvisor and bring to my work with Dissidents. So, Becomes Noise exists in a space between - between styles, genres, musical materials, and musical identities. Its form apes the verse-chorus structure of popular song, in a way that is more homage than parody or satire. This structure is subverted by way of extended improvisational soundscapes in the “intro,” “outro,” and “bridge” sections, as well as a pizzicato surprise in the second “verse” (does it djent? Um…maybe…?).
