In embarking on this collaborative experiment with Matt Baltrucki, we had discussed what could be done from a production standpoint to make the studio process an instrument in itself, how could recording techniques enhance a piece of music beyond a “live in the room” scenario? With these considerations in mind I figured why not try and turn a trio of percussion, cello, and synths, into a death metal band. Meshuggah Tune utilizes an off kilter rhythmic style superimposed on a simple 4/4 back beat. Matt had the job of transplanting the traditions carried by each of our instrument onto a heavy, distorted and aggressive production similar to what is found in heavy metal production today.
